In the Jepak by-election, opposition candidates have claimed that there will be no check-and-balance if Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) wins the seat. Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Office (Corporate Affairs, Information and Sarawak Public Communication Unit-UKAS), Datuk Abdullah Saidoi, criticized this remark, stating that it demonstrates political immaturity. He argues that GPS assemblymen are not simply “yes men” and are willing to speak out in the state legislative assembly. Abdullah Saidoi highlights instances where GPS assemblymen have raised concerns about delayed projects or government failures.

Furthermore, Abdullah Saidoi emphasizes that Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is not an autocratic leader and values the opinions of his ministers and assemblymen. He believes that the state Cabinet engages in constructive discussions that lead to resolutions. Addressing the Jepak by-election, Abdullah Saidoi acknowledges that there are issues to be resolved but emphasizes that it is the responsibility of the government’s assemblyman to address them. He criticizes opposition candidates for exaggerating their chances of winning the seat in order to attract attention.

In separate advice to GPS candidate Iskandar Turkee, Abdullah Saidoi urges him to quickly learn how to address issues in the constituency should he emerge victoriously. He hopes that Iskandar can prove his capabilities to critics and demonstrate why he is the right candidate for the seat. The Jepak by-election will see Iskandar Turkee competing against Joseph Sumbang of Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) and Chieng Lea Ping of Parti Aspirasi Rakyat Sarawak (Aspirasi). The voters are scheduled to cast their votes on Nov 4.
