SIBU: An unemployed man has been fined RM5,000 in default six months jail by a Magistrate’s Court after he pleaded guilty to criminal intimidation on Friday (July 19).

Mohammad Zaidi, 36, was charged with criminally intimidating his 69-year-old mother by threatening to burn down her house on Jalan Masjid at 10.15pm on July 15.

The accused was charged under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, which carries a jail term of up to seven years, a fine, or both, if convicted.

According to the facts of the case, the accused, who is the youngest of five children, threatened to burn down the family house because he failed to get money from his mother.

The police arrested Mohammad Zaidi at 12.55pm on July 16 following a report lodged by the woman.

Police investigation showed that the accused often caused trouble at home and often scolded his mother.

On that day, he asked his mother for money and was refused. He became angry and threatened her.

The accused, however, could not pay the fine and opted for the jail sentence.
