The Johor State Government has set aside RM78mil to prepare for this year’s monsoon season, according to Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor (pic).
In order to address over 100 flood-prone areas in Johor, the allocation was distributed to 16 local authorities in the state earlier this year, said Johor Housing and Local Government Committee chairman.
“The flood mitigation works started earlier this year and will continue until early next year to align with the monsoon season,” he stated.
Out of the identified hundred hotspots, 16 are located in the Johor Baru region.
“Some areas can be resolved within three to six months, while others require a phased approach and long-term mitigation measures,” he explained.
Mohd Jafni made these remarks during the UDA Carnival 2023 event at Angsana Johor Baru Mall on September 30, where he addressed reporters.
Johor Health and Unity Committee chairman Ling Tian Soon and UDA Holdings Bhd president and CEO Datuk Mohd Salem Kailany were also present at the occasion.
Additionally, the state government collaborated with the Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID) to clean all drainage systems in Johor, including monsoon drains and flood retention pools, to prevent blockages during heavy rainfall.
