A member of the Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) has disclosed receiving a threatening message for simply carrying out her duties.
Chan San San shared that she had received a text message on October 24 from an individual believed to be the owner of a second-hand car shop.
During a press conference held at the Pasir Gudang MCA division headquarters, Chan expressed that the man warned her not to push the tiger to the point of attacking and killing someone.
She stated, “In the text message, written in Mandarin, he said that ‘there is still a chance for us to work together’. Concerned about my safety, I have reported the incident to the police. Instead of resorting to such measures, there are proper channels available for him to voice his objections towards any actions taken by MBJB.”
Chan proceeded to share that she lodged the report at the Johor Jaya police station. The man also allegedly claimed to have people within MBJB who were keeping a watchful eye on her.
She continued, “He pointed out that I had raised the matter in three meetings, which is true. This indicates that someone is leaking confidential information discussed during these meetings. Hence, I hope that MBJB will also investigate this matter.”
According to Chan, the matter initially began in March when she received complaints from residents living around Jalan Bunga Matahari regarding the operation of an illegal shop.
The shop, which sold used cars, was utilizing government-owned land to display the vehicles.
“During a meeting, I raised this issue with MBJB and requested an investigation. Subsequently, MBJB took action against the owner and issued several warnings before sealing off the area,” Chan explained.
She also mentioned, “Although the owner has since removed the cars, it appears that he may still be dissatisfied with the actions taken against him.”
In response, a police official confirmed that a report had been received concerning the threat on November 2.
