The incident was reported to the Johor Fire Rescue Department operation centre at 5.21pm on Wednesday, August 23.
The Pasir Gudang fire station chief, Sarhan Akmal Mohamad, stated that 14 firemen were immediately dispatched to the scene. They arrived with a Light Fire Rapid Tender (LFRT) vehicle, a sports utility vehicle, and a hazardous materials (hazmat) engine.
“Our firemen are being assisted by the hazmat team from the Larkin fire station,” said Sarhan Akmal in a statement.
Initial investigations reveal that a valve for a styrene monomer storage tank was leaking. Styrene monomer is commonly used in the production of plastic and synthetic rubber products, with key applications in various sectors including electronics, healthcare, household, automotive, construction, and packaging.
The company’s emergency response team (ERT) contacted the operation centre, requesting assistance from a hazmat team to close the valve.
“Our hazmat team is currently present at the scene,” confirmed Sarhan Akmal.
He further advised the public against engaging in speculations that could cause anxiety among residents of Pasir Gudang and threaten public order.
