The Johor Education Department has been instructed to keep a close watch on online videos that depict cases of school bullying in the state, according to Aznan Tamin, the newly-appointed chairman of the education and information committee. The aim is to verify the authenticity of these videos and determine if they truly occurred in Johor. Aznan shared this information during a press conference held on Tuesday (March 5) after witnessing the signing of a note of understanding (NoU) between the department and Uda Land (South) Sdn Bhd for environmental sustainability initiatives.

There have been instances where old videos were circulated on social media platforms or incidents that happened elsewhere were mistakenly attributed to Johor. Aznan emphasized the importance of verifying the sources of these videos before spreading them, as it can cause unnecessary anxiety among parents. As the assemblyman for Tanjung Surat, he stressed the need for responsible sharing of information online to maintain public trust.

Aznan also announced plans to introduce measures to reduce single-use plastics in schools through the Johor Sustainability Education Action Plan and Johor Sustainable Development Plan 2030. The initiative will begin with four selected schools under the NoU, namely SK Kompleks Uda, SK Bandar Uda 2, SMK Bandar Uda Utama, and SMK Bandar Baru Uda. He encouraged parents to participate by preparing meals for their children in tiffin carriers or reusable containers instead of using polystyrene food boxes.

Furthermore, the chairman highlighted the importance of promoting environmental sustainability in education to raise awareness among students about the impact of single-use plastics on the environment. By implementing these initiatives, Johor aims to create a culture of sustainability and reduce waste generation in schools. Aznan expressed optimism in expanding these efforts to more schools in the near future to instill eco-friendly practices among students for a greener future.

In addition to addressing environmental concerns, Aznan emphasized the need to address school bullying effectively by verifying the accuracy of videos depicting such incidents. By monitoring and verifying the sources of these videos, the education department can take appropriate action to prevent the spread of false information and protect the well-being of students in Johor. This proactive approach reflects the state’s commitment to ensuring a safe and supportive learning environment for all students.
