Authorities in Johor Baru swiftly intervened to control a disturbance during the FA Cup 2023 football final match at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri, preventing the situation from escalating. Mohd Hairi Mad Shah, chairman of the Johor youth, sports, entrepreneur development, cooperatives, and human resources committee, stated that the removal of some supporters was carried out to prevent any unwelcome incidents from occurring within or outside of the stadium.

“If left uncontrolled, it could lead to a huge fight between the football supporters,” said Shah. “So we should be thankful for their quick action to control the situation by handling the matter immediately so that all of the ongoing provocation between supporters was stopped.”

Shah made these remarks to reporters at Imperial Paragon Cuisine restaurant at the Grand Paragon Hotel on Tuesday (July 25).

He further expressed his hope that the authorities would continue to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of the public. “These are public places, and there are people who came here with the elderly and children,” he emphasized. Shah also called for football supporters to demonstrate their support for the sport without engaging in any provocation.

Earlier, it was reported that the police were investigating a case in which a man claimed to have been assaulted by the Johor Military Force (JMF) while watching the FA Cup final at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium on July 22. Iskandar Puteri OCPD Asst Comm Rahmat Ariffin stated that a police report had been filed by the 30-year-old victim on July 23 at 11.50am at the Sungai Besi police station in Kuala Lumpur.

“The victim claimed that he had been beaten while watching the football match between Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) and Kuala Lumpur (KL) City,” said ACP Rahmat. “The victim had returned to Kuala Lumpur and received treatment at Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM).” Rahmat added that the doctor had confirmed the victim’s injuries, including a broken nose, bleeding on the head and right eye, and swelling all over his body.
