The Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) Johor chapter chairman Ivan Teo has suggested that Johor should consider hosting more international events, particularly sports events, in order to attract more foreign tourists. Teo pointed to the Formula One Singapore Grand Prix as an example of how a major sporting event can boost the tourism industry of the host country. He mentioned that when the F1 race is held in Singapore, many race fans cross the Causeway to Johor for a holiday after the event. Teo believes that Johor has the necessary infrastructure to host major events and provide accommodation for visitors.
Teo also mentioned that Johor currently ranks second in terms of the number of hotel rooms, just behind Kuala Lumpur. With 18,700 hotel rooms, Johor is looking to increase its capacity in the future as internationally known hotel brands are considering establishing their presence in the state. This expansion in hotel rooms will make Johor more ready to host major international events.
One such event that Johor is preparing to host is the Asia Pacific Climate Week (APCW), a United Nations-backed programme. The event, which will take place from November 13 to 17 in Johor Baru, is expected to attract between 1,000 and 2,000 delegates from various countries. Teo mentioned that the state government has been actively engaging with stakeholders in preparation for APCW and believes that the success of this event could open doors for Johor to host more major international events in the future.
