Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that the Immigration Department will soon activate 12 contra lanes at the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (KSAB) during peak hours for vehicles exiting Johor. This initiative aims to address congestion at the Second Link, especially during busy periods.
Loke mentioned that the ministry will deploy a vehicle equipped with cameras to the KSAB Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex as a temporary solution to overcome technical challenges. The lack of cameras to record the data of vehicles exiting Johor at the contra lanes has been an obstacle for the operation of the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) system.
The minister emphasized that the deployment of the vehicle with cameras would serve as a short-term fix to capture the necessary vehicle information. He made these statements during a press conference at KSAB CIQ on Thursday (Jan 11).
Additionally, Loke stated that the contra lanes, which allow motorists to use lanes meant for the opposite direction, could be activated at any time once the vehicle arrives next week. He reiterated that the Immigration Department will have the authority to activate the contra lanes whenever necessary.
Meanwhile, Johor Works, Transportation and Infrastructure Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh expressed gratitude to the ministry for assisting with the activation of the contra lanes. He hopes that this initiative will effectively reduce congestion at KSAB CIQ.
