A Johor MIC leader in Johor Baru has declared her candidacy for the national Wanita chief position. N. Saraswati, the Johor Wanita MIC chief, expressed her readiness to take on the role, citing her extensive 30 years of political experience as preparation.
During a press conference on Friday (April 5), Saraswati stated, “After some discussion with party members and leaders, I have decided to seize the opportunity to compete for the post in the upcoming term. I have been actively involved in various areas in my 33 years in politics, and I believe I am prepared to take on the role.”
She mentioned that she has received approval from the party’s leadership to partake in the election, anticipated to occur next month. “I hope to empower women in all spheres, such as careers, skills, education, and entrepreneurship. With my political experience, business background, and involvement in running a non-governmental organisation (NGO), I am equipped to fulfill my responsibilities as the party’s Wanita chief,” shared Saraswati, who also serves as the Kemelah assemblyman.
Having held the position of state Wanita MIC chief for six years, Saraswati expressed her readiness to challenge the incumbent in the upcoming election. In the previous national Wanita MIC election in 2021, Datuk Mohana Muniandy secured victory with around 2,550 votes, defeating the then-incumbent SJ Usha Nandhini.
Mohana, who previously served as Wanita MIC chief from 2013 to 2018, decided not to defend the post during the 2018 party elections.
