A meeting is set to take place with the Immigration Department to discuss traffic flow at the Causeway and Second Link during the upcoming by-elections in Johor Baru, according to a Johor exco member.

Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh, the chairman of the works, transportation, and infrastructure committee, stated that the meeting will determine whether there is a need for special lanes at the two land crossings during the by-elections.

“We will assess if it is necessary to provide special lanes for those returning to vote in Pulai and Simpang Jeram.

“During the recent elections involving the six states, we did not experience any abnormal congestion at the Causeway or Second Link.

“Malaysians working in Singapore who are participating in the elections returned to their hometowns earlier, thus no special measures were required,” he informed The Star on Thursday (Aug 24).

He added that during the 15th General Election last year, the state government allocated specific car lanes for those returning from Singapore to vote.

“If necessary, we may adopt a similar approach for this election. However, we need to evaluate the situation first,” he explained.

Polling day for the Pulai parliamentary and Simpang Jeram state by-elections will be on Sept 9, coinciding with school holidays in Singapore.

Nomination day is set for Saturday (Aug 26) with early voting scheduled on Sept 5.

These elections were called following the passing of Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, who represented both constituencies.

Salahuddin, who was also the Amanah deputy president and former domestic trade and cost of living minister, died on July 23 at the age of 61 due to a brain haemorrhage.
