JOHOR BARU: The upcoming year 2024 is set to be a significant one for Johor in the realm of sports, as one of its athletes is poised to represent Malaysia in the prestigious Summer Olympics. State youth, sports, entrepreneur development, and cooperatives committee chairman Mohd Hairi Mad Shah expressed excitement over the various prestigious sporting events that Johor athletes will partake in, including the Summer Olympic Games slated to take place in Paris from July 26 to August 11.
One of the Malaysian athletes gearing up for competition in Paris is track cyclist Mohd Shah Firdaus, a representative from Johor whose performance is eagerly anticipated. Mohd Hairi shared these details during his address at the 30th Johor Sports Award ceremony held at Persada International Convention Centre on Wednesday (Feb 28) night.
In addition to the Olympics, the Johor contingent is also gearing up for the Malaysia Games (Sukma), scheduled to be held in Sarawak from August 17 to August 24. Mohd Hairi highlighted that during the previous Sukma event, Johor emerged as the overall champions for the first time in 36 years, securing an impressive tally of 77 gold, 52 silver, and 44 bronze medals.
As the countdown to Sukma Sarawak begins with 171 days left, Mohd Hairi emphasized the importance of utilizing the time effectively for practice and training. He urged the state sports council, coaches, associations, and athletes to dedicate themselves towards achieving success and making a mark in the upcoming games.
