KUALA LUMPUR: The Jom Latih Belia Digital Madani Carnival aims to empower housewives, particularly single mothers, by cultivating their skills and enabling them to generate additional income. Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail stated that the carnival was organized in response to the adverse effects of the Movement Control Order (MCO) and the COVID-19 pandemic on women’s income and education. “We want the Human Resources Development Corporation (HRDCorp) to collaborate with the Bandar Tun Razak parliamentary constituency and the local police to encourage women’s participation in this program and increase their income,” the Prime Minister’s wife informed reporters after inaugurating the carnival at the International Youth Centre on Sunday (Sept 10).

In addition to its main objective, the carnival presented various classes, such as cake decorating and bead accessory making. When queried about the possibility of conducting more programs similar to the carnival for the Bandar Tun Razak constituency, Wan Azizah, who is also the Member of Parliament for the area, explained that she needs to consider other pending issues within the constituency. “We are doing our utmost. We also need to tailor the programs to cater to those who truly require assistance in other areas. For example, in Bandar Tun Razak, there are numerous concerns among the urban poor that we need to address. These are aspects we must take into account,” she explained.

Meanwhile, Suzana Jamhari, a 49-year-old housewife from Pudu, signed up for a cake decorating course at the event after being informed by her friends. “Cake decorating is a challenging task, but it’s enjoyable! With ample practice, one eventually succeeds,” Suzana remarked. Asnaliza Mohd Asri, a 39-year-old part-time worker from Cheras, also attended the bead accessory-making course because her daughter is fond of such accessories. “I want to try making my own beads as my children like them, so I am eager to learn. Usually, I only purchase ready-made beads, but when there is an event like this, why not participate?” Asnaliza expressed. She further added, “This event teaches us how to produce them. If you are determined enough, you can even start your own business.”
