The construction of a 5G telecommunications tower in Taman Bukit Permai, Kajang, has been halted due to complaints from residents. Kajang assemblyman David Cheong Kian Yong stated that the project has been temporarily put on hold to allow engagement sessions between residents and the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj).
Some residents opposed the building of the 24m-tall tower as they claimed they were not informed about the project. A resident, known as Neo, expressed their objection to the tower being constructed at the site and mentioned that no notice was given to the residents.
According to Cheong, the tower’s emissions and radiation levels were found to be below the permissible exposure rate set by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission. He emphasized that if the tower is not erected in the area, Taman Bukit Permai might face a lack of 5G network coverage. Cheong also encouraged residents to submit complaint letters to the local council.
The construction contractors avoided answering residents’ questions about the project, which caused concerns among the residents. Neo mentioned that they are worried about the potential long-term effects of having the tower in the area.
Kajang assemblyman Cheong stressed that the tower’s emissions and radiation levels comply with the mandatory standards outlined by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission. He also highlighted the potential impact on Taman Bukit Permai’s 5G network coverage if the tower is built elsewhere.
Residents who have complaints can submit their concerns in written form to the local council. The press conference held by Cheong was attended by councillor Lim Kim Eng and MPKj personnel.
