GEORGE TOWN: Police have seized heroin worth RM135,250 following an anti-drug operation where they raided a house used as a drug lab in Kedah.
Penang police chief Datuk Khaw Kok Chin said that the lab was busted after two men were arrested in Simpang Ampat, Nibong Tebal on Friday (July 21).
He said the operation started at 10pm on Friday night and ended at 7am on Saturday (July 22).
“We confiscated the drugs and were led to a house used as a drug laboratory in Bandar Baharu, Kedah where we confiscated various drug processing equipment,” said Comm Khaw.
He added that in the first raid, the two men nabbed in Simpang Ampat were aged 27 and 30 and have criminal records involving drugs, among others.
“They were arrested in a car in front of a restaurant. Both were arrested for being involved in drug processing activities,” said Comm Khaw at a press conference held at the state police headquarters in George Town here on Sunday (July 23).
He added that a search of their vehicle found 22 packages of heroin weighing 10kg and 6.25g of syabu, worth a total of RM135,250.
He said police were then led to the house in Bandar Baharu, Kedah used as a drug lab.
Comm Khaw said that the syndicate had been active since the beginning of this year and the total amount of seized drugs could be used by 20,000 addicts.
“We are tracking several members of the syndicate who are heroin-processing experts. We suspect that they are still in Penang or nearby,” he said.
He added drug supplies were obtained from neighbouring countries to be processed.
Comm Khaw said the two suspects have been remanded for seven days until July 28 and the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
