As the fasting season approaches, bazaar operators and consumers in Johor Baru are reminded to maintain clean surroundings to prevent the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes. Dr Mohtar Pungut@Ahmad, director of the Johor Health Department, emphasized the importance of proper waste disposal to prevent mosquito breeding.
Dr. Mohtar highlighted that even small amounts of standing water can serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes, making it crucial to dispose of rubbish and food packaging correctly. He pointed out that neglected areas with pockets of liquid can easily become breeding sites for mosquitoes when cleaning activities are not thorough.
During the launch of the state-level World Kidney Day celebration at a mall in Iskandar Puteri, Dr. Mohtar mentioned that the recent Chinese New Year holiday and school break could contribute to an increase in dengue cases as people leave their homes unattended for days.
Reports from Feb 19 indicated a significant spike of 157% in cumulative dengue cases during the seventh epidemiology week in Johor, with 2,555 cases compared to 994 cases in the same period the previous year. Johor Baru recorded the highest number of cases, followed by Kulai, Kota Tinggi, Batu Pahat, and Segamat.
During the same period, three deaths related to dengue were reported statewide, raising concerns about the severity of the situation. Authorities are urging the public to take preventive measures and maintain cleanliness to reduce the risk of dengue transmission.
