PETALING JAYA: Malaysians have been urged to continue raising awareness on social media about the Gaza genocide and supporting humanitarian efforts.

Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) made the call in conjunction with World Humanitarian Day 2024 on Monday (Aug 19).

Its executive director Sevan Doraisamy said Malaysians must continue to spread awareness of the genocide so that more people can contribute to humanitarian efforts and exercise their right to freedom of expression through peaceful protests and social media postings.

“These actions may seem small, but they are powerful collectively to help ensure that the international community plays its part in addressing such impunity,” he said in a statement.

World Humanitarian Day is observed on Aug 19 each year, paying tribute to humanitarian workers killed or injured in the course of their work and honouring those who continue to provide life-saving support.

It recognises the importance, effectiveness and positive impact of humanitarian work.

“On this basis, these actions should also be extended to other forgotten wars in the Middle East and Africa such as Sudan and Yemen, as well as ongoing conflicts within our region, namely the Rohingya issue in Myanmar,” added Sevan.

He added that Malaysia hosts the largest number of Rohingya refugees and asylum seekers in South-East Asia, and urged better treatment of these displaced persons.

He said promoting public awareness of the Rohingya crisis and urging the government to uphold refugees and asylum seekers’ fundamental human rights while here would go a long way towards addressing the problem.
