KOTA BARU: The Kelantan state election will mainly consist of head-to-head battles between PAS and other parties, as well as independent candidates. According to the Election Commission’s announcement on Saturday morning (July 29), 40 state seats will witness straight fights, four seats will encounter three-cornered fights, and only one seat will see a four-cornered fight. In the Kota Lama seat, four candidates will vie for the position of the next state assemblyman. These candidates include Hafidzah Mustakim from Pakatan Harapan – Amanah, Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary as an Independent candidate, Tan Book Kian from Parti Rakyat Malaysia, and Zamri Ismail from Perikatan Nasional – PAS. Meanwhile, seats that will experience three-cornered fights are Chempaka, Tendong, Jelawat, and Temangan, where the contest mainly involves candidates from Perikatan Nasional, Barisan Nasional, and independent candidates.
This time around, a total of 96 candidates will be competing for seats across all 45 state constituencies in Kelantan. Interestingly, the competition in Kelantan will be dominated by men, with 88 male candidates and only eight female candidates. Additionally, data from the Election Commission suggests that more senior citizens will be contesting in the polls, as 60 out of the 96 candidates are over the age of 50. On the other hand, the youngest candidate in this election is 26-year-old Muhammad Fakhran Che Jusoh from Barisan Nasional, who will be competing in the Pulai Chondong constituency against PAS candidate Azhar Salleh.
As for the parties, Pakatan Harapan will field 14 candidates in total, while Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional will present 31 and 45 candidates respectively. In addition, there will be one candidate from Parti Rakyat Malaysia and five independent candidates in the race.
