CHUKAI: In preparation for the Kemaman parliamentary by-election on Saturday (Dec 2), police have deployed 12 Op Cantas teams to ensure a smooth voting process, said Terengganu police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mazli Mazlan. They are stationed at hot spot areas throughout the parliamentary constituency to maintain peace and order.
DCP Datuk Mazli Mazlan reassured that there have been no reports of any untoward incidents as of now, while he oversaw the voting process at Sekolah Menengah Sultan Ismail in Chukai. 112 traffic policemen are also on duty to ensure a smooth flow of traffic for voters to safely reach their respective voting centres.
The parliamentary by-election will be a straight fight between Barisan Nasional candidate Gen (Rtd) Tan Sri Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor and Terengganu Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar of PAS. The by-election was called after the Terengganu Election Court annulled the victory of PAS candidate Che Alias Hamid in the 15th General Election on Sept 26.
Raja Mohamed Affandi encouraged voters to come out early to fulfill their responsibilities in light of the afternoon rain forecast. He expressed his satisfaction with the smooth voting process and commended the Election Commission (SPR) for managing it effectively during his visit to the polling center at Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Baru Kerteh.
Ahmad Samsuri, on the other hand, anticipated a voter turnout of over 70 percent, the target set by the EC, at the voting center at Sekolah Kebangsaan Kerteh. He expressed gratitude for the favorable weather and hoped it would continue until evening, despite the earlier prediction of rain.
As of 11am, 27 percent of the 141,043 registered voters in the Kemaman parliamentary constituency have exercised their voting rights, according to the EC. – Bernama
