Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) has announced that they will not be fielding a candidate in the upcoming Kemaman parliamentary by-election on December 2. The party’s president, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, stated that Pejuang has yet to decide whether they will support any party participating in the by-election. Mukhriz emphasized that their focus is currently on strengthening the party for the 16th general election (GE16), rather than on the by-election. He addressed these matters during a press conference on October 18.

Mukhriz also took the opportunity to dismiss rumors that former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad would be running as a candidate in the by-election. This clarification came amidst speculations surrounding Mahathir’s involvement. The Election Commission (EC) has scheduled December 2 as the polling day for the Kemaman by-election, with nomination day set for November 18 and early voting on November 28.

The by-election in Kemaman has been prompted by a ruling from the Terengganu Elections Court on September 26, which invalidated the victory of PAS candidate Che Alias Hamid in the 15th general election. Consequently, a by-election is deemed necessary to fill the vacancy created by the annulled outcome.

In addition to these developments, Mukhriz revealed that Pejuang has organized a march in support of the Palestinian cause and condemnation of Israel’s actions in Gaza. The march will take place on October 20, starting from the Tabung Haji mosque in Jalan Tun Razak and proceeding to the United States embassy. He urged Malaysians to join the demonstration, which is scheduled for 2 pm after Friday prayers. This event is intended to show solidarity with Palestinians and denounce the violent acts committed by Israel.

Overall, Pejuang’s decision not to participate in the Kemaman by-election allows the party to focus on strengthening itself for the upcoming GE16. With their president denying any plans for Mahathir to run, the political landscape for this by-election remains uncertain. However, the EC has established crucial dates for the electoral process, following the annulment of Che Alias Hamid’s previous victory. Meanwhile, Pejuang’s march in support of Palestine intends to raise awareness and garner Malaysian support for Palestinians affected by Israel’s actions in Gaza.
