The police have initiated an investigation against Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin for allegedly making remarks that touched on issues relating to religion, race, and royalty during a campaign event for the Kemaman by-election. Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay stated that the investigation against the Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman was carried out under Section 4(A) of the Election Offences Act 1954 for promoting feelings of ill-will or hostility. The investigation was prompted by a police report lodged against Muhyiddin on Friday.
At a press conference after observing the voting process at the polling centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Mentok, Ayob Khan mentioned that Muhyiddin was alleged to have issued a “fatwa” for Umno members to leave the party and that those who do so would be rewarded for their “hijrah” during a ceramah in Kemaman. Ayob Khan also cautioned all party supporters to refrain from holding gatherings or post-election parades to avoid public disorder.
He stated, “The police will take appropriate measures to ensure public safety and order during the post-election period,” and mentioned that approximately 280 policemen were mobilized to ensure a smooth by-election in Kemaman. The by-election is between Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Gen (Rtd) Tan Sri Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor and Terengganu Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, of PAS. The by-election was called following the decision of the Terengganu Election Court on Sept 26, which annulled the victory of PAS candidate Che Alias Hamid in the 15th General Election. – Bernama
