In Sabah’s interior Keningau district, a young man was arrested by police after being found with two bakakuks, also known as homemade shotguns, and an air rifle. The 19-year-old was stopped by police near a plantation in Nabawan at around 11.30am on Wednesday (Dec 13) while he was driving.
Keningau police chief Supt Yampil Anak Garai mentioned that the raid was carried out by a team from the state police contingent headquarters and Keningau following a public tip-off. In addition to the illegal firearms, a total of nine live bullets and a box of air rifle ammunition were seized by the police personnel. “All the firearms and ammunition were found in the suspect’s car,” Supt Yampil said.
Supt Yampil also stated that the suspect admitted to owning and using the weapons since 2019. “The suspect has been released under police bail, but Investigations are ongoing under Section 8(a) of the Firearms Act 1960,” he mentioned. This particular law entails a prison sentence of up to seven years, a fine of no more than RM10,000, or both upon conviction.
