Residents of KEPONG Baru are frustrated with the deteriorating condition of their back lane drains. According to them, sections of the drainage along Jalan Belabas and Jalan Beberek have collapsed. The drains are frequently clogged and the accumulation of food waste in them attracts pests. Alan Chan, a resident, pointed out that the drains have not been upgraded for fifty years and are now old and in poor condition. As a consequence, pests like lizards and mice find refuge there, causing residents to close their back doors by 4pm every day as a preventive measure against the pests invading their homes. Seeing the severity of the situation, Kepong activist Yee Poh Ping has brought this issue to the attention of Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).
Yee stated that Mohd Nor Asham Suradi, the deputy director of DBKL’s Road Maintenance Unit, paid a visit to the site after being informed about the situation. During the visit, residents expressed their concerns regarding the urgent need to repair the drains. Yee also highlighted that the design of the drains is outdated. Furthermore, he reported the pest problem to DBKL’s Health Department, emphasizing that it needs to be addressed.
