Approximately 600 residents of Kampung Sungkup in Sungai Petani are facing connectivity issues as a result of vandalism to a telecommunications tower provided under the National Digital Network Plan. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) announced on Tuesday (Oct 17) that villagers had reported the incident to the Kedah MCMC office on Sunday (Oct 15), after discovering signs of vandalism that included cut cables and stolen equipment from the tower. The Kedah MCMC office and the tower’s service provider promptly visited the scene and conducted an inspection, with the service provider filing a police report.
MCMC is currently considering various measures to restore telecommunication services in Kampung Sungkup. The telecommunications tower facilitates Celcom, Digi, Maxis, and U Mobile services through the shared 4G MOCN (Multiple-Operator Core Network) method, as stated by the commission.
The public has been urged by the MCMC to report any information regarding the incident or any suspicious activity near telecommunications infrastructure sites to the police immediately. Offenders can be fined up to RM300,000 or sentenced to a maximum jail term of three years, or both, the commission added.
