In an interview, Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin stated that it would not be possible for Perikatan Nasional to take over the federal government in the upcoming six state elections. He explained that a change in government could only occur if the people’s representatives shift their support away from the unity government. Mohamed Khaled also mentioned the anti-party hopping law, affirming that individuals would not be able to change their support. He stated, “I do not think it will happen.”
The statement came in response to PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang’s claim that a victory for Perikatan in the six state elections would result in a change in the federal government. Mohamed Khaled criticized Hadi Awang’s statements, accusing him of trying to confuse voters in order to gain support for Perikatan. He remarked, “But I do not believe this will happen.”
Mohamed Khaled further emphasized the importance of giving the unity government a chance to implement the Madani Economy framework. He described the framework as “very big and very drastic” and clarified that it represents a transformation rather than a continuation of previous plans. According to him, changing the economy will present new challenges that cannot be solved using old methods. He added that the government is committed to ensuring sustainability in their plan and addressing the nation’s high national debt.
The comments by Mohamed Khaled highlight the political dynamics leading up to the six state elections and the differing perspectives on potential shifts in government power. His assertion that Perikatan cannot take over the federal government unless there is a significant change in support illustrates the obstacles faced by opposition parties in their attempts to gain control.
