The Kinabalu Birdwing, locally known as Kalibambang Emas, has been declared the state butterfly of Sabah, according to State Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew. Liew explained that the species, scientifically known as Troides andromache, represents the rich biodiversity of Sabah and has long remained hidden in the mountainous regions of Mount Kinabalu and Crocker Range. She further highlighted that the Kinabalu Birdwing’s unique ecological niche has attracted attention from entomologists globally and has fascinated collectors for centuries.

Liew described the Kinabalu Birdwing as a vibrant and elusive creature with a wingspan ranging from 60mm to 70mm. The butterfly showcases a magnificent combination of black, yellow, grey, brown, and white colors, serving as a testament to nature’s artistic palette. Additionally, Liew emphasized the species’ distinct characteristics and ecological significance, considering it a living masterpiece.

However, Liew expressed concern over the potential extinction of the Kinabalu Birdwing due to habitat destruction. The species has been categorized as “vulnerable” on the Red Data List of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Consequently, Liew revealed that the Kinabalu Birdwing is already a protected animal under Sabah’s Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997, and efforts will be made to potentially upgrade its protection to a “Totally Protected Species.”

Liew stressed the importance of swift and decisive action to safeguard the Kinabalu Birdwing and the ecosystems it relies on. She believes that nominating this species for recognition will not only contribute to its protection but also raise awareness about broader biodiversity conservation efforts in Sabah. Preserving the Kinabalu Birdwing indirectly contributes to preserving its habitat.

Liew acknowledged the collaborative efforts between state agencies and the Kinabalu Birdwing Project, particularly recognizing Dr. Stephen Laurence Sutton, the lead researcher of the project. She also extended gratitude to the Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu for their contribution to preserving the elusive butterfly through their project in Kampung Kiau Nuluh.

Since 2019, the Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu has partnered with homestay operators in Kampung Kiau Nuluh to encourage tourists to visit and capture pictures and videos of the rare Kinabalu Birdwing in the mountain forests of Mount Kinabalu. This collaboration aims to provide homestay operators with a sustainable income stream from nature tourism, specifically targeting the Kinabalu Birdwing.
