The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah deviated from the usual protocol during the 66th National Day celebration in Putrajaya. After the event concluded, the King and Queen unexpectedly approached the crowd. This unexpected move brought joy to the people in attendance who cheered and clapped. Their Majesties walked over 200m along the Dataran Putrajaya boulevard to interact with the crowd and even took selfies upon request. When they heard calls from the opposite side of the road, the King and Queen crossed over to meet the people.

For Al-Sultan Abdullah and Tunku Azizah, this National Day celebration marked the last one as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, as His Majesty’s reign would conclude on Jan 30. The event was an unforgettable experience for Azelan Ishak, a 47-year-old civil servant, who had the opportunity to shake hands with the King. This was his second time participating in the celebration with his family. He expressed his indescribable feelings and mentioned that he never imagined having the chance to shake hands with a King. Azelan Ishak recounted the moment when His Majesty approached his side of the walkway and extended his hand to the crowd, and he was able to shake it. The experience left him with goosebumps.

Zuraidah Mohd, 46, Azelan Ishak’s wife, also had an extraordinary encounter as she had the chance to shake hands with the Raja Permaisuri Agong. She expressed her happiness and described it as a memorable experience that she never imagined would happen in her lifetime.

A group of friends consisting of Nurul Hidayah Mustaffa, Nur Nabihah Ismail, and Siti Hafizah Shaikh Hamzah, all 23 years old, were astonished by the King and Queen’s humble gestures towards the people. They were surprised to find themselves just five meters away from the King, considering that they had previously witnessed His Majesty interacting with the public from a distance. While they were unable to personally greet the King and Queen, they found it humbling to witness their genuine engagement with the crowd.

Overall, the 66th National Day celebration in Putrajaya became extraordinary when the King and Queen mingled with the crowd, disregarding the typical protocol. This unexpected gesture brought joy and excitement to everyone present at the event.
