KUALA LUMPUR: Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah on Friday (Sept 15) conveyed his congratulations to Tharman Shanmugaratnam, who was inaugurated as Singapore’s ninth president on Thursday (Sept 14).
The king expressed his hope, through a Facebook post, that both Malaysia and Singapore will continue to collaborate closely in order to bring progress and prosperity to their respective countries and people.
According to the post, His Majesty also expressed his desire for Malaysia and Singapore, as neighboring countries with deep historical ties, to maintain their efforts in enhancing bilateral relations across various fields for mutual benefit.
Shanmugaratnam secured victory in the presidential election by obtaining over 70% of the 2.5 million votes on Sept 1.
During his inaugural speech as head of state on Thursday, Shanmugaratnam stated his commitment to effectively represent Singapore and advocate for the interests of the republic abroad, in accordance with the government’s objectives and priorities. – Bernama
