Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah concluded a more than 2,000km journey at KM0 of the Pan Borneo Highway in Telok Melano, Sarawak on Wednesday (Sept 13).
The arrival of the King was greeted by a large crowd waving flags and shouting “Daulat Tuanku”. He arrived at around 12.40pm from Kuching, which is approximately 137km away.
The King was accompanied by his sons, the Regent of Pahang Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, Tengku Panglima Raja Kol Tengku Amir Nasser Ibrahim Shah, and Tengku Ahmad Ismail Mu’adzam Shah. They posed for photographs at the KM0 signboard and greeted the crowd along the roadside.
Also present at the event were acting Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tan Sri Mohammad Asfia Awang Nassar, Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, and other state dignitaries.
During the visit, the Works Minister, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, briefed the King on the background and progress of the Pan Borneo Highway in Sarawak, which is nearing completion with 97% progress.
“This visit by Their Majesties is a testament to their commitment towards improving Sarawak’s road infrastructure as a catalyst for socioeconomic and industrial development, as well as enhancing comfort and safety for road users,” the Works Ministry stated in a press release.
Following the event, the King conducted the ground-breaking ceremony for a new mosque in Telok Melano. He approved the name “Masjid Al-Sultan Abdullah” for the mosque.
For the local villagers, it was a moment of pride to host the King in Telok Melano, which was previously only accessible by boat before the construction of the road to Sematan.
“This is a historic occasion, not only for Telok Melano but also for the Lundu district, as this is the first time the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has visited here,” expressed a villager named Wasli Mos.
Al-Sultan Abdullah and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah initiated the Kembara Kenali Borneo tour in Tawau on September 3 to connect with Malaysians residing in Sabah and Sarawak.
The tour concluded in Telok Melano after 11 days, covering a distance of 2,154km on the Pan Borneo Highway.
