In Kota Kinabalu, two policemen were attacked by a mentally ill patient with a meat cleaver while trying to rescue the man’s mother who was being held hostage in their home in Menggatal.
The police received a report about a mentally unstable person who had locked himself up with his mother and sister at Taman Jaya Diri. The sister was also assaulted.
Kota Kinabalu police chief, Asst Comm Mohd Zaidi Abdullah, stated that the police tried to convince the 42-year-old man to release his hostages but he refused, only letting his sister go.
After trying to negotiate for almost two hours, the police had no choice but to break down the door and enter the house to save the mother.
A struggle ensued between the police and the suspect, resulting in injuries to the officers. The suspect only sustained minor facial injuries.
The injured officers are in a stable condition, while the mother was unharmed throughout the incident.
According to ACP Mohd Zaidi, the suspect is a patient at Bukit Padang psychiatric hospital. The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code, which can lead to a maximum 20 years imprisonment if the suspect is found guilty.
