KOTA KINABALU: The streets of downtown Kota Kinabalu are usually bustling, but on Sept 16, they were even more lively than usual due to the state-level Malaysia Day celebrations at Padang Merdeka nearby.
Music and colorful lights filled the field, and a 10-minute fireworks display followed the completion of the formal programs.
Thousands of people gathered to welcome Sabah Yang di-Pertua Tun Juhar Mahiruddin, his wife Toh Puan Norlidah RM Jasni, and other state ministers, assemblymen, and dignitaries.
The event began with the rendition of the national and state anthems, followed by the flag raising and flag handing over ceremonies. A montage of Sabah’s history was shown, along with various programs including mini concerts.
Local artists, both famous and less known, captivated the crowd with patriotic songs, showcasing their incredible voices.
The highlight was a beautifully-choreographed song and dance performance, portraying the formation of Malaysia with a background video explaining the details.
Within the performance, the audience was taken on a trip down memory lane, showcasing the changing times of people, fashion, lifestyles, and economic activities.
The performance beautifully depicted people of all races living together harmoniously, dancing to the beat of various cultural music, emphasizing Malaysia’s ethnic and cultural diversity.
The crowd clapped, danced, and cheered along with the show.
Although this year’s official Malaysia Day celebration took place in Kuching, Sarawak, Sabah’s own event on this auspicious day met expectations.
Earlier, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor reminded the public to stay united and preserve the long-standing peace and harmony enjoyed by the state.
He emphasized that togetherness is key for the continued development of the state and country, as Malaysia commemorates its 60th anniversary of formation.
