KUALA LUMPUR: Police authorities in Kuala Lumpur apprehended nine individuals, including a woman, suspected to be involved in a love scam syndicate. The arrests were made during three separate raids conducted at Jalan P. Ramlee on Tuesday (Sept 20).

Kuala Lumpur police chief, Comm Datuk Allaudeen Abdul Majid, revealed that the syndicate employed profile photos of foreigners on social media platforms to deceive victims by sending them love-themed messages derived from a pre-defined script.

“Based on our investigation, we believe the syndicate was executing a love scam operation on popular platforms such as Facebook, Tinder, Instagram, and WhatsApp,” explained Comm Allaudeen in a statement released on Wednesday (Sept 20).

The victims who fell victim to the scam were instructed to transfer funds either to local bank accounts or overseas, he added.

The syndicate targeted victims from Malaysia, Singapore, and China, according to Comm Allaudeen.

“During the raids, we seized a variety of items, including 24 mobile phones, seven laptops, and the script used by the syndicate to deceive their victims,” he stated.

Comm Allaudeen emphasized that the case is currently being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which deals with cheating offenses. He also urged the public to exercise caution while using social media platforms.

“Prior to making any transactions, it is important to verify the authenticity of bank accounts through the website http://ccid.rmp.gov.my/semakmule,” Comm Allaudeen advised.

“If you come across any suspicious activity, do not hesitate to contact the KL police operations room at 03-2146 0584/0585, or visit the nearest police station to report it to the authorities,” he concluded.
