People are avoiding using the overhead bridge on Jalan Langat in Klang at night due to safety concerns caused by vagrants and the lack of lighting. The bridge was built to provide convenience for those heading to Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah (HTAR) or Masjid Jamek Ar Rahimiah, but it has now become a safety hazard.

Concerned pedestrians are urging the Klang Municipal Council’s (MPK) enforcement team to patrol the bridge, especially at night, to ensure their safety. Muhamad Syafiq, a local resident, shared that many people are scared to use the pedestrian bridge. In the past, MPK officers would patrol the bridge multiple times a day, assuring people’s safety from vagrants. However, these patrols have stopped, leading to concerns about the safety of the area.

The bridge has become a shelter for homeless people, deterring pedestrians from using it. Muhamad also pointed out that all the lights on the bridge are not working. During a site visit by StarMetro, it was observed that a vagrant was occupying one end of the bridge and all 15 lights were damaged.

Dr Elangovan Krishnan, the head of Selangor Safe Community and Environment Association’s ad hoc committee, expressed that people are afraid to use the bridge due to the presence of vagrants who have made it their “home”. Dr Elangovan suggested that banners should not be tied on the railings of the bridge as it obstructs the view of pedestrians. He also demanded the revival of enforcement patrols on the bridge by MPK. Additionally, the nearby bus-stop is in need of refurbishment for the safety and comfort of commuters.

Johan Surib, a pensioner, called for the construction of a better bus-stop that provides proper shelter from the elements. He emphasized the importance of cleanliness and urged commuters not to litter. Shanmugip Priya, a homemaker, highlighted the issue of a clogged drain behind the bus-stop and suggested that MPK clean up the area to prevent mosquito-breeding.

Norfiza Mahfiz, the director of MPK Corporate Communications Department, assured that the council will fix all the lights on the bridge to discourage homeless people from occupying it at night. She also mentioned that MPK will refurbish the bus-stop area.
