KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is implementing low-carbon initiatives in line with its commitment to addressing climate change and advancing sustainability, says mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.
He said the council is working to reduce its carbon footprint by promoting green transportation, expanding green spaces and implementing energy-efficient solutions in its jurisdiction.
“As part of this initiative, all council drivers are required to turn off their vehicle engines whenever they stop or are waiting, which significantly reduces unnecessary emissions.
“These actions align with SDG (sustainable development goal) 13 on climate action and support the Sarawak post-Covid development strategy’s focus on environmental resilience and sustainable growth,” he said.
Wee said this at the 36th Kuching City Day celebration here on Thursday (Aug 1).
The celebration, which commemorates Kuching’s elevation to city status in 1988, was officiated by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg.
Wee said other initiatives by MBKS included the installation of smart LED lights to enhance safety and energy efficiency.
In addition, he said community facilities such as the Kueh Siak Hong hawker centre and MBKS Pending indoor stadium had been upgraded.
“These enhancements not only boost our city’s sustainability but also forster community pride and a sense of belonging among residents.
“Our main goal is to establish Kuching South as a model of low-carbon urban living, ensuring a healthier environment for future generations,” he said.
Similarly, the Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) is developing a low-carbon master plan in line with the Sarawak government’s sustainability goals.
Its mayor Hilmy Othman said the master plan was being drafted in consultation with academics and experts in various fields.
“We hope that our initiatives, together with other agencies, will pave the way for Kuching to become a low-carbon city,” he said.
Hilmy also said DBKU was setting up a smart city command centre with sensors for CCTV, smart streetlights and parking.
“This is the first step towards becoming a smart city,” he said.
