The world’s first hydrogen-powered tram, developed in China, is en route from its production site in Hunan province to Malaysia, where it will serve as a prototype for Kuching’s urban transport system. The tram will be shipped from Shanghai to be integrated into Kuching’s autonomous rapid transit (ART) system, as reported by China Global Television Network (CGTN).

CGTN’s report highlights several advantages of the smart tram, including a longer driving range, shorter refueling time, energy-saving features, and environmental benefits. It has been upgraded with intelligent design, aligning with Malaysia’s goal of achieving a zero-emission and intelligent public transport system.

Once the tram arrives in Malaysia, it will undergo a three-month testing period in Kuching. If successful, the smart tram is expected to alleviate traffic congestion in the city and provide commuters with a reliable and efficient service.

The development of this hydrogen-powered tram is credited to China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation subsidiary Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Research Institute Co Ltd. It not only enhances Malaysia’s transport system but also supports China’s smart manufacturing initiative along its Belt and Road project, as stated in the report.

Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin announced on July 12 that the tram would undergo a two-month engineering run in preparation for a proof of concept (POC) exercise in November. The initial phase of the POC exercise was conducted in China in February. Following his inspection of the ART track construction progress in Samarahan on July 11, Lee expressed confidence in the timely completion of phase one of the Kuching urban transport system.
