The Transport Minister has stated that the travel route for the Kudat-Palawan international ferry service has not yet been decided. Anthony Loke mentioned that Malaysia is waiting for the Philippines authorities to propose a ship that meets the safety criteria set by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). He emphasized the importance of adhering to safety criteria and stated that despite Malaysia’s willingness to facilitate the process, the safety of passengers and the ferry is of utmost importance. He also mentioned that the proposed ferry must comply with the necessary international certifications and provided by the Philippines authorities.

Furthermore, Loke mentioned the requirement to comply with the ship and port security code in order to access maritime facilities in Sabah. He stated that not only ferries from the Philippines, but also local-based ferry operating companies could apply for permits in the area. Loke also highlighted that the Kudat ferry terminal is prepared to become an international terminal with a Customs, Immigration, Quarantine, and Security (CIQS) complex.

The Transport Minister sees potential in the Kudat-Palawan route as an entry point for tourists from both countries. If the type of ferry can be finalized and agreed upon by both countries, the route can be established under the Brunei–Indonesia–Malaysia–Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP EAGA) for immediate operations.

In response to a question about the government’s plans and measures to open permits for the Kudat-Palawan international ferry route and promote economic growth and tourist entry to Kudat, Loke emphasized the appointment of a consultant to finalize tender documents for upgrades to the Kuala Kedah ferry terminal. He acknowledged the importance of the ferry for locals and tourists intending to travel to Langkawi and mentioned dredging works carried out in that area to address the issue of shallow water levels.

Loke stated that ferry companies are welcome to apply to operate their services at the Kuala Kedah ferry terminal, as long as they adhere to the required safety specifications and market demand exists.

Loke’s comments were made in response to a question by Datuk Verdon Bahanda regarding the government’s plans to open up permits for the Kudat-Palawan international ferry route and stimulate economic growth. Ahmad Fakhruddin Fakhrurazi also inquired about the Transport Ministry’s efforts in improving the Kuala Kedah ferry services.
