LABUAN: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has foiled an attempt to smuggle duty-free alcoholic beverages in the waters off Tanjung Klias Menumbok, Sabah.
According to Labuan MMEA director Captain Nudin Jusoh, a routine patrol of Labuan waters led to the discovery of a fibreglass boat heading towards Sabah at around 3am on Friday (August 4).
Upon approaching the boat, the MMEA team witnessed the suspect fleeing the scene, abandoning the smuggled goods.
The beverages, valued at RM25,000 along with the boat, were confiscated and taken to the MMEA office for further investigation under the Customs Act 1967.
Captain Nudin attributed the success of the raid to the continuous patrol operations and cooperation from the public in efforts to combat smuggling activities.
