KOTA KINABALU: Five vehicles parked in a housing parking lot near Lintas here were partially buried when debris fell on them during a landslide brought by the downpour late Wednesday (July 12).
No casualties were reported and firefighters used hydraulic tools to rescue the trapped cars.
The Fire and Rescue Department received a report of the incident at a covered parking space at Taman Publik Fasa 2 near there around 8pm. The team from Lintas fire station immediately responded and discovered the cars partially buried under debris, trees, and a collapsed roof.
“After successfully retrieving the cars, the team secured the area with barricade tapes and advised nearby residents to steer clear of the landslide zone,” said a Department spokesman. The Civil Defence Force personnel were also present to offer additional assistance.
Sabah’s west coast districts have been hit by natural disasters like flash floods and landslides due to continuous heavy rainfall since Wednesday noon. Fortunately, the situation has improved in most areas as the rain subsided. However, it is expected that the wet weather will persist for the next two days, accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department has attributed the bad weather to a low-pressure system forming west of the Philippines, which is moving northwest towards southern China.
