Langkawi MP Datuk Mohd Suhaimi Abdullah has expressed regret for his insensitive comment directed towards a government backbencher last month in Parliament.
Although he did not specifically mention Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, to whom the remark was directed, he issued an apology to the Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul and all Members of Parliament.
“I would like to apologize for my error during my Budget 2024 speech on Oct 26. I am apologizing to Tan Sri Speaker and MPs for my offensive and hurtful statement,” he stated in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (Nov 9).
“I want to emphasize that as an MP of the legendary island, Langkawi is close to my heart. Issues regarding Langkawi and its people should not be trivialized, and perceptions should not be cast,” he added.
On Oct 26, Mohd Suhaimi made a remark to Kok regarding her clothing choices when visiting Langkawi, after she had inquired about the dress code for the holiday island.
He also commented that he speculated about Kok’s attire for her trip to Langkawi.
He faced criticism from various quarters for his statement, with Kok’s colleagues from DAP, Young Syefura Othman (PH-Bentong) and Lim Lip Eng (PH-Kepong), submitting two motions to refer him to Parliament’s Rights and Privileges Committee.
