Learn from PAP, Boo urges DAP leaders

JOHOR BARU: Dr. Boo Cheng Hau suggests that DAP leaders should learn from Singapore’s People’s Action Party (PAP), where its leader was asked to take leave during a corruption investigation. According to the former Johor DAP chief, in order for Malaysia to achieve a “first-class” status and a more efficient government, the party should first introspect.

Dr. Boo emphasized the importance of DAP walking the talk and pioneering reforms for Malaysia to become a first-class economy. He highlighted that any leader under investigation for corruption should take leave from their party and official duties. He cited Singapore’s PAP government, which has a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and takes decisive action against involved leaders or ministers.

Moreover, Dr. Boo proposed that once a leader is charged with corruption, they should resign from the party and public positions that could enable them to pressure authorities. He stressed the need for individuals to have the courage to account for their responsibilities individually and step aside, even in the face of making mistakes. Dr. Boo shared that he felt compelled to weigh in on the matter after receiving requests from fellow party members.

In March 2022, Dr. Boo, who also served as the former Skudai assemblyman, called for Lim Guan Eng to step down as DAP chairman due to his corruption charges. This statement aligns with his belief that leaders facing corruption charges should take appropriate action.

On Wednesday (July 12), it was reported that Singapore Transport Minister S. Iswaran is assisting the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) with an ongoing investigation. Iswaran has been placed on leave while the investigation progresses.
