KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye has emphasized the importance for the police to maintain integrity, transparency, and accountability within their ranks. As the Chairman of the Alliance for a Safe Community, he believes that more effort must be put in by the police force to improve their integrity. Lee stated on Sunday (Oct 22) that reforms in training, recruitment, and internal oversight mechanisms may be necessary to achieve this.

According to Lee, corruption within the Malaysian police force is not a new issue and has its roots stretching back several decades. He attributes this problem to political interference, bureaucratic obstacles, and a lack of transparency. One of the most alarming aspects of corruption within the police force is its alleged ties to criminal syndicates and the underworld.

Lee pointed out that corruption within the police force has severe consequences for Malaysian society. It impedes the fight against crime and enables criminals to operate without fear of punishment. Additionally, it negatively impacts economic growth and foreign investment by creating an environment of insecurity and unpredictability.

In a positive light, Lee commended the new leadership in Bukit Aman for their dedication to restoring the force’s integrity, improving its public image, and tackling new challenges such as cybercrime and transnational organized crime.

Overall, Lee Lam Thye highlights the need for the police to prioritize integrity and take active measures to combat corruption within their ranks. Reforms are necessary in areas such as training, recruitment, and internal oversight in order to enhance transparency and accountability. By addressing these issues, the police force can regain public trust and contribute to a safer and more secure Malaysian society.
