The Mid-Autumn Festival is approaching, indicated by the return of colorful traditional lanterns. Customers are flocking to buy lanterns for their children for the event, as there is less than two weeks left until the festival on September 29. Sunshine Wholesale Mart’s marketing communications manager, Bryan Wong, anticipates an increase in sales and reveals that they have been displaying lanterns since the end of August. The lanterns have been imported from China more than a month ago, and many parents are buying them to encourage their children in preserving Chinese culture and tradition. Wong mentions that the traditional lanterns made with glass paper or folded paper remain the most popular choice.
Wong believes that the Chinese community will celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival in a grand manner now that the pandemic is virtually over. Various events, including lantern parades, are being organized for the festival. In addition to lanterns, there is also an increased demand for mooncakes.
Sunshine Wholesale Mart even organized a lantern parade at its Bandar Baru Ayer Itam branch on Saturday. Among the shoppers for lanterns, a software engineer named Low Sheau Wei was spotted with her eight and five-year-old sons. They chose traditional lanterns with fish and chicken designs. Low emphasizes that lanterns are an essential item for children to understand more about the festival and its history. She shares that she takes her kids out every year to buy lanterns and decided to buy them a bit earlier this year to build up anticipation for the festival.
Apart from traditional lanterns, battery-powered lanterns with LED bulbs are also available in the market.
