KOTA KINABALU: Efforts are being undertaken to address the issue of congestion charges at the Sapangar Bay Container Port near here.

In a statement on Tuesday (July 9), the Sabah Logistics Council (SLC), an entity under the Sabah Works Ministry, said it was committed to collaborating with port operators, shipping companies, and all stakeholders over the matter.

In response to recent industry grievances and issues in the media, the SLC said it was in the midst of identifying and implementing immediate measures to alleviate the current congestion at the Sapangar Bay Container Port.

This is so, it added, to prevent the need for surcharges that could burden local industries and consumers.

“The SLC is fully aware of the significant impact that port congestion and potential surcharges can have on Sabah’s economy.

“We are dedicated to not only addressing these immediate concerns but also developing sustainable, long-term solutions.

“Our focus is on expediting these efforts with the utmost seriousness and urgency,” the SLC said.

Several key stakeholders had voiced concerns over the imminent imposition of congestion surcharges at the Sapangar port from July 16.

Association of Frozen Meat and Food Importers of Sabah chairman Lim Young Peing had criticised the surcharges, adding the group was seeking a resolution for the good of the industry and consumers.

He said the surcharges, set at RM500 for a 20ft (5.89m) container and RM1,000 for a 40ft (12.02m) container, would significantly increase operational costs and add an undue burden on those whose livelihoods depend on the port.

Sabah Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe said the state Cabinet had discussed the matter.

The cabinet, he said, understood how urgent this situation was and has mandated the State Secretary to lead the efforts in addressing it promptly.

Phoong added that a meeting was held recently with the stakeholders and port operator.

In turn, the SLC said it will be conducting a series of urgent meetings and consultations with key stakeholders.

It said these discussions were aimed to develop and implement strategies that enhance the efficiency and capacity of its port infrastructure.
