KLANG: Tan Sri Razarudin Husain stated that low salaries are a contributing factor to some rank-and-file personnel engaging in corruption. The Inspector-General of Police emphasized that the ultimate factor in determining whether police personnel become corrupt or commit misconduct is their attitude.

He acknowledged that low pay is a factor, using the example of a police constable who takes home RM2,500 with salary and allowances. Razarudin pointed out that this amount may be considered low in urban areas like Kuala Lumpur, but it is considered high in rural areas such as Kuala Nerang, Besut, Kinabatangan, Belaga, and Beluran.

While recognizing the impact of low salaries, Razarudin stressed that it should not be used as an excuse for corruption. He referenced news reports of company directors being caught for corruption, questioning whether they are also low-income earners.

Razarudin emphasized the need to educate and nurture young personnel to reject corruption and avoid burdening the community with a negative perception of the police. He also expressed concern that negative perceptions may lead to the public hiring more private security to replace the police.

The Inspector-General of Police highlighted the role of the Integrity and Standards Compliance Department in overseeing the conduct and discipline of police personnel. He noted that the department is responsible for taking action against errant cops and correcting those who show tendencies to commit misconduct.

Overall, Razarudin emphasized the importance of addressing the root causes of corruption, including low salaries, and educating and nurturing young personnel to reject corrupt behavior.
