In Pasir Gudang, Hassan Abdul Karim assured the lower income group that they will still be protected despite the increase in Sales and Service Tax (SST). He emphasized the importance of registering in the Central Database Hub (Padu) system to benefit from the targeted subsidy programme.

The Pasir Gudang MP acknowledged the challenges faced by the public, from the weakening ringgit to the introduction of SST, but highlighted Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan’s projection that the ringgit is expected to strengthen by the year-end.

Hassan pointed out that 90% of the lower-income population will not be affected by the 2% increase in tax, and they will continue to receive subsidies for their electricity usage.

He expressed optimism in the government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, assuring the people that better days are ahead.

These statements were made at the Pasir Gudang MP and Johor Jaya Assemblyman Chinese New Year Open House at Dewan Taman Molek on Saturday (March 2).

Hassan highlighted the importance of the Padu system in ensuring that only eligible individuals benefit from government initiatives, complementing the existing e-Kasih system. He emphasized the need for comprehensive data to better understand the people and deliver aid directly to their accounts.

The SST rate for most services, including overseas-based digital services, was increased from 6% to 8% starting March 1. Certain services such as food and beverage, telecommunications, and vehicle parking were exempted from the tax hike.

Overall, Hassan reassured the lower-income group about their protection amidst the SST hike and encouraged them to have faith in the government’s initiatives. He emphasized the importance of registering in the Padu system to access subsidies and aid effectively.
