KUALA LUMPUR: Lynas Malaysia has been granted permission to import naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) until March 2026, according to Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang.
The Australian rare earth materials producer will also be allowed to conduct cracking and leaching activities, under the condition that the radioactivity levels in the water leach purification (WLP) residue remain low.

“The Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB) has amended Lynas Malaysia’s current license conditions to permit the company to import NORM until March 2026,” said Chang Lih Kang during a press conference at the Malaysian Nuclear Agency on Tuesday (Oct 24).
“We will also allow them to engage in cracking and leaching activities,” he added.
The WLP residue will be tested by local experts to verify that the radioactivity level remains below one becquerel per gramme, as stipulated by the AELB.
