ALOR SETAR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested nine enforcement agency officials on Monday (Sept 11) for allegedly soliciting and accepting bribes from fishing vessel owners and runners from 2018 to 2021. The enforcement officials were suspected of receiving bribes in exchange for protecting fishing vessels that violated the Fisheries Act 1985 and not taking legal action against them.
In addition to the nine enforcement officials, two civilians were also detained for providing bribes ranging from RM300 to RM7,000 to the officials. The nine enforcement officials served in Kuala Kedah, Batu Uban, and Langkawi. All 11 suspects, aged between their 30s and 50s, were arrested between 10am to noon after being summoned to give their statements at the Alor Setar MACC office.
According to a source from the MACC, the enforcement officials are believed to have committed the offenses between 2018 and 2021. The bribes they accepted were deposited into their personal accounts. The case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009, confirmed by MACC intelligence division director Datuk Azmi Kamaruzaman.
Of the nine enforcement officials, five will be taken for a remand application at the Alor Setar Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday (Sept 12). The remaining officials have been released on MACC bail after their statements were recorded. – Bernama
