UTRAJAYA: Tan Sri Azam Baki has cautioned candidates in the upcoming six state elections to be cautious in their campaign activities, following the nullification of the Kuala Terengganu GE15 parliamentary seat result.
The chief commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) warned candidates against engaging in corruption, stating that his officers are closely monitoring their actions. He also mentioned that his officers were monitoring the movements and activities of candidates’ agents.
“MACC enforcement officers, with the cooperation of multiple agencies, are already on the ground to ensure this election is clean,” Azam said in a statement on Friday (Aug 3).
He further added that information collected by the officers would be relayed to the MACC’s top officials within 24 hours for swift action. “If there are any elements of corruption, we will take immediate action, including making arrests,” he stated.
The Terengganu Election Court nullified the victory of PAS’ Datuk Amzad Hashim, who had initially won the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary seat in November 2022. The court ruled in favor of the petitioner, Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk Mohd Zubir Embong, who successfully proved that corruption had taken place with the intention of influencing voters in the constituency.
A by-election is scheduled for the seat on Aug 12, featuring a head-to-head contest between Ahmad Amzad and Azan Ismail, representing Pakatan Harapan.
Earlier, Azam had stated that the MACC does not need to develop guidelines regarding the distribution of aid and assistance during elections, as the Election Offences Act already clearly outlines what is permissible and what is not.
