The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has announced that it has obtained new evidence in its probe into allegations of corruption regarding a book printing project at the Education Ministry. Two individuals, including a former political secretary, have been arrested to assist with the investigation of the project valued at RM80 million, which was awarded through direct negotiations, according to MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki.

“As this is a new case, a significant amount of new evidence has been collected by MACC investigating officers. However, we request some time,” he said, speaking to the media during the 2023 MACC shooting programme at the Malaysian Prisons College shooting range in Kajang on Saturday.

On September 22, a former political secretary and a printing company owner were arrested by MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner (operations) Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya under Section 16(a)(B) of the MACC Act 2009, as part of the ongoing investigation.

Addressing concerns expressed by the public over the shortage of local white rice despite assurances from Padiberas Nasional Berhad (Bernas) of adequate supply, Azam stated that no reports of corruption pertaining to the issue have been received by MACC.

“I want to assure you that if any party is involved in this matter, particularly if there is any corruption in the rice supply, including any party that bribes an authority, MACC will take necessary actions,” he emphasized.

On September 29, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu dismissed allegations of stock hoarding by suppliers as the cause behind the shortage of local rice supply and assured that enforcement efforts would be carried out nationwide.
