A civil servant suspected of accepting a car as a bribe in exchange for a favor granted to a company has been arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), according to an MACC source. The senior administrative assistant, who works for a local government agency in Terengganu, was apprehended when he arrived at the MACC office in Kemaman to give a statement. The officer, in his 50s, allegedly received the RM90,000 car in 2016 in order to ensure that the company would continue to receive contracts worth RM230,000 at his agency from 2017 to present.
Another individual, the owner of the company who is also in his 50s, was detained at the same MACC office to assist with the investigation. The officer will be taken to the Kemaman Magistrate’s Court on September 5th to obtain a remand order. Hazrul Shazreen Abd Yazid, the MACC Director in Terengganu, confirmed the arrests and stated that the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009. – Bernama
